In-frame vs in-frame effect: what are you being quoted?

SHERATON INTERIORS · KITCHEN DESIGN

True in-frame cabinetry places the door inside a surrounding frame. An in-frame-effect design creates a related appearance through its door or cabinet detailing. The two can look similar in a photograph, so open the cabinet and ask how the quoted system is built.

Term What it describes What to inspect
In-frame The door sits within a surrounding cabinet frame. Frame construction, hinges, door clearances and usable drawer openings.
In-frame effect A framed appearance created by a specific door or cabinet system. How the appearance is achieved and what happens when the door opens.
Lay-on The door fronts sit over the front of the cabinet. Coverage, gaps, hinges, edging and access to internal fittings.
Shaker A door style with a recessed centre panel. Rail widths, panel proportions and the construction used with that style.

Why a closed-door photograph is not enough

A photograph can show the pattern of lines across a kitchen, but it rarely shows the hinge arrangement, the inside of the cabinet or the working clearance of a drawer. Ask the showroom to demonstrate a comparable unit, including a tall cabinet and any internal pull-outs you plan to order.

Keep the specification language precise. “Framed look”, “Shaker” and “bespoke” do not on their own establish that the doors sit within a structural frame.

Compare daily use as well as appearance

Try reaching into a corner unit, loading a deep drawer and opening adjacent appliance doors. Check how the chosen construction works with the storage accessories, bin system and appliances in your actual plan.

There is no universal winner. The right option is the one whose appearance, practical access, available sizes and price work for your room. Manufacturing quality and installation matter in each construction type.

Your questions, answered

Is in-frame effect misleading?

It is a legitimate design description when the supplier explains the system accurately. Ask how it differs from true in-frame construction so your expectation matches the order.

Are in-frame kitchens always more expensive?

Not in every comparison. Different ranges, materials and scopes can change the result. Compare the full written specification rather than inferring a price from the construction label.

Can an in-frame kitchen have modern storage?

Yes, subject to the chosen cabinetry and available fittings. Check the clear opening and compatibility of each accessory in the design.
