Sink or hob on the kitchen island? Plan the working layout

SHERATON INTERIORS · KITCHEN DESIGN

A sink or hob makes an island part of the working kitchen. Leaving it clear creates uninterrupted preparation and serving space. Choose after considering cooking habits, the route through the room, services and the relationship with seating.

Follow a meal through the proposed room

Picture taking ingredients from the fridge, washing them, preparing them, cooking and clearing away. Then repeat the exercise while someone is sitting at the island or opening the dishwasher.

The best position reduces awkward journeys and conflicts. A beautiful island can become frustrating if it blocks the route between the main tasks.

Option What it offers What to resolve
Sink on the island A working preparation and clearing area facing the room. Plumbing, drainage, dishwasher position, drying space and the view of washing-up.
Hob on the island Cooking can face the room, with preparation space nearby. Extraction route, appliance clearances, power or gas requirements, landing space and separation from seating.
Clear island An uninterrupted surface for preparation, serving and shared tasks. Whether the sink and hob elsewhere still form a convenient working arrangement.

Extraction needs an early decision

For an island hob, review the proposed extractor and route before fixing the cabinetry. A ceiling, overhead or downdraft solution can have different space and installation requirements. The exact appliance instructions and site conditions govern the design.

Do not assume a downdraft unit will fit every cabinet or floor arrangement. Confirm the space it needs, the effect on storage, access for maintenance and how the system will discharge or recirculate air.

Keep seating comfortable and clear of hazards

Think about where people place drinks, where hot pans are set down and how children or guests move around the island. Review the seating, worktop overhang and appliance positions together.

Use the appliance manufacturer’s specified clearances and a measured design for your room. A single universal island dimension cannot resolve every layout or appliance combination.

Your questions, answered

Is a hob on an island always a good idea?

No. It depends on extraction, clearances, seating and how the room is used. A hob against a wall may be a better choice in some layouts.

Can I move the sink onto an island?

It may be possible, but drainage, water supply and the floor construction need assessment before the design is agreed.

How wide should the walkway be?

It depends on the room, doors, appliances, seating and users. Ask your designer to show the clearances on a measured plan and check the specified appliance requirements.
